Long gone are the days when Miami was thought of as a place to simply hang out, play some golf or tennis, and get a tan.

Nowadays, there’s a bustling cultural scene that lets aficionados attend Miami art events year-round.

Yes, from New Year’s Day to New Year’s Eve, there’s no shortage of collectible paintings, sculptures and other creative visual media on display at the ubiquitous Miami art events that the area is becoming renowned for. In addition, classes, seminars and discussion groups for fans of Miami art events take place all over.

So, let’s take a look at just a few of the many that are coming up.

The Bass: Adult Programs/April 18/6 p.m.

At the latest in this periodic series of seminars, artists can explore everything from 3D paper sculptures to films and other forms of artwork. The Bass’ mission is to create an environment in which artists and art aficionados can learn about their favorite topics throughout their lives.

For fans of the spoken word, poetry doesn’t get any more inspirational than when spoken by a young artist. At Women + Words – which is being presented in collaboration with O, Miami Poetry Festival – some of the area’s most talented poets will be showcasing their talents.

Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami/Orit Halpern’s The Smart Mandate: Ubiquitous Computing, Environment, and ‘Resilient Hope’/April 20/7 p.m.

This renowned artist will discuss a wide range of topics, including how artistic expressions can help soothe during trying times. Among the topics she’ll be discussing as it relates to artistic expression: climate change; energy scarcity; economic uncertainty.

The Bass: Portfolio Workshop/April 29/12:30 p.m.

For the aspiring artist, it’s vital that he or she knows how best to show off their creation(s) – especially in a professional setting. Well, that’s just what the good folks at The Bass are doing with this two-hour symposium. A true can’t-miss for artists of all ages.

WallBrawl presents Beer Brawl 2 at Lincoln’s Beard Brewing Company/May 13/7 p.m.

Speed is the name of the game at this exciting art event at which some of the area’s most talented local artists – including Alvin Hernandez, Aquarela, Carlos Solano, The Audetor, Kre8artafax, Mars, TheDoww and TeePop – partake in a 90-minute “art brawl” to see whose creation will earn them the right to be called “#BeachBrawl Champion.”

Chocolate & Art Show Miami/May 18-19/8 p.m.

If there’s an event more tempting than a two-night extravaganza of lively music, culinary creations, incredible art and more delectable chocolate than you’d be able to eat in a lifetime – and all taking place in the one-of-a-kind Wynwood Warehouse Art Project – we can’t think of what it would be. Featuring artisans of every genre and demographic, Chocolate & Art Show Miami will no doubt put an unforgettable South Florida stamp on this nationwide movement that was started in Los Angeles.
