Sure, the Magic City is best-known for its fun, sun and beautiful people. But what you may not realize is that the city is full of history and stunning architecture. Yes, Miami historical landmarks abound far and wide. From the world-famous Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Villa Casa Casuarina and Biltmore Hotel to the Ancient Spanish Monastery, Cape Florida Lighthouse and the Freedom Tower – to name just a few – both residents and tourists alike will never run out of Miami historical landmarks to visit. With that thought in mind, let’s take a look at a few.
Located in mid-Miami Beach (4441 Collins Ave., Miami Beach), this iconic hotel has hosted every big-name entertainer who has ever visited Miami.
Sinatra.
Ali.
Stallone.
Pacino.
Madonna.
You name the celeb – from actors to athletes to politicians – they’ve all taken in this world-famous building that was designed by famed architect Morris Lapidus and updated around the turn of the millennium. Now, it’s also the home of LIV – a nightclub that has attained global renown.
Perhaps no restaurant embodies both Miami Beach’s rich history – and its international evolution – quite like The Forge (located at 432 41st Street, Miami Beach). With its encyclopedia-sized wine list and ornate décor, the original version was a favorite hangout for everyone from entertainers and athletes to vacationing reputed mob bosses and elected officials. A few years back, it underwent a complete renovation replete with new menu items – yet has retained just enough of the original ambience that made it so unique in the first place.
Now listed as a National Historical Landmark, the Biltmore Hotel (1200 Anastasia Ave., Coral Gables), is full of history. From hosting President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the 1930s-40s to hosting President Bill Clinton in the 1990s, the Biltmore is one of the most glamorous and unique destinations in all of Miami. From weddings to proms – and every other special event you can imagine (including countless wedding proposals made beside the one-of-a-kind Venetian Pool), this legendary hotel has seen it all.
You know the building that lights up in the middle of the city whenever there’s some kind of celebration or statement to be made? Well, this is that building – an iconic architectural accomplishment that was designed by I.M. Pei and, media reports have it, was paid for, in large part, by funds acquired through nefarious and likely illegal activities. That said, the Miami Tower (100 S.E. 2nd St., Miami) is among the most impressive buildings in all of Miami-Dade County – especially at night.
Located in the heart of Little Havana on Calle Ocho (3555 S.W. 8th St., Miami), this legendary restaurant is known for both its incredible Cuban cuisine – and for being the gathering place where both first-generation Cuban exiles, who fled their native land after Fidel Castro came to power, as well as second- and third-generation Cuban-Americans can discuss politics and current events all while celebrating their shared heritage. A truly one-of-a-kind spot where Spanish, English and Spanglish flow freely!
