As they are every year, the eyes of the interior design world were fixated on Milan in early April, as the city hosted Milan Design Week 2017. Located in the northern Italian region of Lombardy, Milan is viewed as a global capital of fashion and design, and this annual event attracts the premier designers and styles from around the world.
Milan Design Week – or Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano – began in 1961 and is the world’s largest furniture trade fair, allowing 2,500 companies to showcase their creations and drawing attendees from nearly 200 countries.
The world-renowned furniture fair is the industry’s most highly anticipated – and critically acclaimed – events, and Milan Design Week 2017 exceeded all expectations. If you were unable to witness the finest new fashions and the top trends of today and tomorrow, here’s a glimpse of what you missed…
When combining the creative mind of Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka and the technological capabilities of LG, it seems that anything is possible. The two paired up recently, and the result – illuminated chairs, dubbed “SF Senses of the Future” – was on display at Milan Design Week 2017.
The chairs feature a high back and sides – almost like three walls – that light up in a variety of colors and other effects. The light is emitted through the sides, or walls, which are actually thin, dual-sided LED panels (courtesy of LG).
This was LG’s Milan Design Week debut, but certainly not Yoshioka’s, who has become a bit of a star at the annual gathering. The chairs have a science-fiction look and feel to them, by design, and received an award for Best Installation at Milan Design Week 2017.
Winner of the Best Concept award at Milan Design Week 2017, the Maarten Baas 101 chair was certainly one of the most unique and inspirational pieces on display this year. Lensvelt is a furniture production company that claims commercial needs with creative design – and Maarten Baas absolutely fits that bill.
The chair features a black frame and your choice of 14 upholsteries. Eight different backshapes are also offered. While the chair was certainly a popular item at Milan Design Week, what truly made it memorable in April was the way it was presented – surrounded by dozens of whispering horns in a dimly-lit setting.
This theatrical approach – creative design in a creative space – is a common tool used by the Dutch designer and clearly it worked, as it earned him one of the week’s most highly-sought-after honors.
B&B Italia reaffirmed its commitment to creative excellence at Milan Design Week 2017 and, once again, showed why One River Point places tremendous value on its partnership with the international brand. Based in the host city of Milan, B&B Italia offers specialty designs for every room in the home.
At One River Point, the high-end designer has been tasked with creating the most elegant and luxurious kitchens in Miami.
At Milan Design Week, B&B Italia introduced new concepts for living rooms and bedrooms, as well as new kitchen collections. Sofa systems, chairs, storage units, tables beds and more, designed by the company’s best, were unveiled to the world at this furniture fashion mecca and met with resounding approval.
If social media posts are any indication of an installation’s success at Milan Design Week 2017, then this was definitely a big winner! Images of Le Refuge by Marc Ange were popping up all over Instagram during the April event.
Designed by artist Marc Ange and curated by The Invisible Collection, this “jungle” bed features a wooden base with pink sculpted, perforated palm trees serving as a canopy of sorts, and appeared in the heart of Milan’s Brera design district. While the word “paradise” was often used to describe this piece during Milan Design Week, Ange says it’s actually “the projection of a childhood memory” and the goal is to invoke feelings of comfort and peace. Judging by the reaction of those in attendance, mission accomplished!
For Milan Design Week 2017, 3M paired up with famed designer Patricia Urquiola and unveiled an outdoor installation that truly engaged event attendees. A Capsule of Memorabilia utilizes 3M’s NOVEC products to help preserve, clean and protect electronics and data storage systems.
While most of the displays at Milan Design Week feature ways to improve the look of your home or commercial space, A Capsule of Memorabilia serves a greater purpose. It provides users with a tremendous level of protection for their best and most cherished assets.
